Home > Weather > Weather File - Wind Rose
The wind rose is divided up into 16 equal arc segments at 22.5 degrees per segment, ranging from N at 0/360 degrees, E at 90 degrees, S at 180 degrees, and W at 270 degrees. The data presented in the wind rose describes the frequency (percentage of time) that the wind was blowing from each of the 22.5 degree directions - the frequency being represented by the radius of each segment. Wind speed in metres per second (m/s) is superimposed on the graph to show average wind speed for when the wind was found to be blowing from a particular direction and the maximum wind speed for the chosen analysis period. The centre of the wind rose describes calm winds.
The heading of the wind rose gives the name of the weather file and the selected analysis period.
Analysis Period
Full Year - hourly wind speed values for a whole year are sorted by wind direction, and the percentage of time that the wind was blowing from each direction is then plotted on the wind rose.
May - September - hourly wind speed values for the period between May and September are sorted by wind direction, and the percentage of time that the wind was blowing from each direction is then plotted on the wind rose.
October - April - hourly wind speed values for the period between October and April are sorted by wind direction, and the percentage of time that the wind was blowing from each direction is then displayed on the wind rose.
January, February (etc) - hourly wind speed values for the calendar month shown are sorted by wind direction, and the percentage of time that the wind was blowing from each direction is then displayed on the wind rose
